Starting in 2018, the international OTEC community has annually awarded the Uehara Prize to a peer-selected individual who has contributed to the development of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. The Prize was suggested during the 5th International OTEC Symposium.

The Prize is awarded in memory of Professor Haruo Uehara, known as the “father of Japanese OTEC,” and inventor of the Uehara Cycle. He passed August 11, 2017.

2025

Using risk-based approaches, Dr. Andrea Copping leads a research team that integrates laboratory, field, and modeling measurements into a coherent body of evidence to support siting and permitting decisions, and to understand the role that these effects play in technology development and project initiation. She leads OES-Environmental – an international project on environmental effects of marine energy development that shares environmental effects information to benefit from progress made around the world, under the IEA Ocean Energy Systems. She also leads projects that focus on fundamental research and development that support Blue Economy development, including ocean observations, aquaculture, and providing power to remote communities and islands, as well as leading the PRIMRE system of databases and information hubs that house all US marine renewable energy data. Dr. Copping works across several scientific disciplines to determine implications of human stressors on marine resources and ecosystems processes, working with stakeholder groups and resource managers to ensure that the available scientific information is accessible and available.

2024

Professor Dato’ Dr Ir A. Bakar Jaafar FASc is currently the Vice President of Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Prof Bakar is a Malaysian Mechanical Engineer by training, environmental scientist by specialization, and ocean thermal energy technology development expert by current pre-occupation. He graduated from the University of Newcastle NSW Australia in 1973 and furthered his graduate study at The Institute of Environmental Sciences, Miami University in Ohio USA earning master’s degree in environmental science in 1976 and completing his doctorate in Marine Geography at the University of Hawaii Manoa in 1984.  He served the Professional Civil Service of Malaysia over 22 years: as Factories and Machinery Inspector 1973-74, Environmental Control Officer 1976-1995, when he took an optional retirement after having been the Director-General, Department of Environment Malaysia 1990-95. He was nominated and elected as a Member of UNCLOS Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf over three five-year terms: 1997-2002, 2002-07, 2007-12. Since 1 June 2012, he has been a Professor at Perdana Centre, University of Technology Malaysia, Razak Faculty of Technology, and Informatics, as well as a Founding Director and Research Fellow at UTM Ocean Thermal Energy Centre.

2023

Miguel Angel Alatorre Mendieta received the 2023 Uehara Prize at the OTEC Symposium in Houston. Professor Alatorre has been instrumental in raising awareness and developing OTEC in Central America. He spearheaded a successful 8th International OTEC Symposia despite a worldwide pandemic, and also oversaw the establishment of Central America’s first OTEC lab. His contributions to the knowledge, use and exploitation of OTEC in Mexico through the training of human resources and as technical manager of the Mexican Center for Ocean Energy Innovation (CEMIE-O) of research projects “Detection of places to take advantage of temperature gradients with energy exploitation potential in Mexico to determine the feasibility of building an OTEC-type plant” giving as a product the maps of potential OTEC sites on the Mexican coast and “Development of prototypes and micro-plants for obtaining and storing energy from temperature gradients specifically designed to optimize processes based on the characteristics of national resources”

2021

The Ocean Thermal Energy Association is pleased to announce that Dr. Hyeon-Ju Kim of KRISO was awarded the 2021 Uehara Prize at the OTEA General Meeting on February 20, 2022. Dr. Kim has spearheaded OTEC development in Korea, beginning his professional efforts at KRISO in 1995.  He has published 16 books, 45 international papers, 95 domestic papers, and has registered 93 patents. He initiated the first “International OTEC Symposium” in 2013, and completed several OTEC pilot projects, leading to the 1MW barge-mounted test that holds the world record for OTEC power production of 338kW. The Korean OTEC team continues to work towards establishment of an onshore 1MW-scale OTEC facility in Kiribati, through use of the equipment tested on the barge-mounted at-sea experiment in 2019.

2020

Dr. Tom Daniel was awarded the 2020 Uehara Prize on January 28, 2021 at the 8th International OTEC Symposium. Among many professional accomplishments, Dr. Daniel served as technical director at the National Energy Laboratory Authority of Hawai’i (NELHA), and also advised Okinawa Prefecture in selecting the site of the intake facilities for the Okinawa Deep Ocean Water Research Center.

2019

Dr. Purnima Jalihal of NIOT was awarded the 2019 Uehara Prize on September 26, 2019 at the 7th International OTEC Symposium in Busan. Although unable to accept in person, she provided pre-recorded remarks to attendees.

2018

Dr. Luis Vega, formerly of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, was presented the first Uehara Prize in 2018 at the 6th International OTEC Symposium on September 26, 2018.

Prize Selection

The awardee is selected by the OTEA Award Committee and confirmed by the OTEA Executive Committee from among nominations solicited by the OTEA secretariat. The prize is awarded at the annual International OTEC Symposia or OTEA General Assembly.

As the sponsor of the Uehara Prize, Saga University Employees and related OTEC development partners in Japan are not eligible to receive the prize.

Haruo Uehara

Haruo Uehara was born March 28, 1940 in Nagasaki, Japan. He graduated from Yamaguchi University in 1963 and joined Kyushu University as an Assistant Professor where he also received his Doctorate of Engineering. He joined Saga University in 1996, eventually becoming President in 2002. After retiring from Saga University in 2005, Professor Uehara founded the NPO Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Promotion Organization. He was awarded the “Order of the Sacred Treasure,” a Japanese medal, in 2015.

In 1994, Professor Uehara invented the “Uehara Cycle,” an adaptation of the Kalina Cycle to lessen the load for condensers by extraction of vapor from the turbine.
